Common myths about life coaching, debunked.

At a glance

  • Life coaching imbues a holistic approach to personal development.
  • Life coaching is not just a means of resolving your issues. It also helps you navigate through challenges and aim higher, thus enabling you to reach your full potential.

Introduction

Remember a time in your life when you were undergoing a significant transition and wished you had someone to talk to? Someone who could help you navigate the how and why of your situation. Traditionally, most of us have turned to elders and friends for life advice and perspective. Human beings, especially when related to each other, are prone to biases and skewed perceptions through which they interpret each other’s reality. Hence, getting an objective answer or guidance becomes difficult. Moreover, friends are not trained to solve your unique problems or be able to understand your quirky dreams. Thankfully, times have changed, and we can avail of other options as well. Life coaching can help you navigate these new and uncommon territories of life.

However, life coaching is shredded in vagueness and has a lot of many myths owing to a low bar to entry and lack of regulation. In this blog post, we’ll attempt to debunk some of those myths and help you understand how a life coach in Australia can help you find balance and confidence in life.

1. Life Coaching can replace therapy.

Life coaching and therapy are different in their purpose and context. Therapy addresses emotional and psychological issues such as depression, anxiety, and trauma. Therapists are trained to diagnose and treat mental health conditions using tools like Cognitive Behaviour Therapy etc. Meanwhile, life coaching is a personal development tool. Life coaches help clients set goals, develop action plans, and overcome obstacles to achieve their goals. Life coaches may not necessarily be trained to diagnose or treat mental health conditions. Coaching is about achieving success in personal and professional life, and therapy is a necessary treatment for mental health issues.

2. Life coaching is only for those who are lost and directionless.

This could not be further from the truth. The fact of the matter is that life coaching is for anyone looking to improve their personal or professional life, regardless of where they are at in their journey. It’s a tool for people who know what they want but need help getting there. As a case in point, a business owner looking to expand their company, an individual looking to make a career change, or a recent college graduate trying to figure out their next steps can all benefit from life coaching. Also, people who are successful and content in their lives can reach their full potential and set new goals for themselves. Coaching can help identify areas for growth, develop strategies to achieve goals, and hold themselves accountable for their progress.

3. Life coaching is not a legitimate profession

One of the most pervasive myths about life coaching is that it’s not a legitimate profession. Some people see it as a hobby or a part-time job rather than a fully-fledged profession.

However, this is not true. Life coaching requires specialized training, education, and certification. The best life coaches in Australia will have certifications from recognized organizations such as the International Coach Federation (ICF), which sets the standards for the coaching profession. Additionally, a life coach who has a background in psychology, social work, or other related fields has a strong foundation to understand and help people. As a client, you should feel free to ask about their work experience and their credentials to avoid any negative experiences later on.

4. Life coaches only work with individuals

In its early nascent stages, life coaching may have been primarily for individuals. But since then, the need for coaching has escalated, and its applicability has extended across teams and communities. Life coaching is now a commonplace practice in the corporate world. Life coaches help businesses improve team performance, productivity, employee engagement, and communication within an organization. Some examples of how a life coach can work with teams and organisations include executive coaching for managers, employee coaching for conflict resolution, and organisational coaching for overall efficacy and balance within the organisation.

5. Life coaching is just about positive thinking

Given the nature of toxic positivity that is peddled as self-help across the internet, positive thinking has become passe and irrelevant. Life coaching is a holistic approach to personal development that enables individuals to identify and achieve their goals. A life coach in Australia works with clients to develop action plans and strategies to overcome obstacles, and this includes addressing negative thoughts and emotions as well as understanding how they impact the client’s life. Life coaching is not just about being positive, but it’s about being realistic and providing practical solutions to reach one’s goals.

6. Life Coaching Uses A One Size Fits All Approach To Serving Clients

Any life coach worth his salt will tell you that life coaching wouldn’t work at all if this was the case. Life coaching is a personalized process tailored to each client, and life coaches use a variety of techniques and approaches to help clients achieve their goals. Life coaches have specialities and niches such as career, relationship, or financial coaching to serve their clients better. They also utilize various techniques and approaches, such as goal setting, active listening, and accountability, to help clients achieve the desired result. And a good life coach will always recommend you to a specialist if your issue is beyond their capacity.

In conclusion, life coaching is a valuable tool that can help you achieve your personal and professional goals, regardless of where you are in your journey. The above-mentioned myths about life coaching need to be brought out in the open and debunked. Whether you’re a stay-at-home parent looking to re-enter the workforce, a business owner looking to expand your company, or a recent college graduate trying to figure out your next steps, life coaching can help you clarify your goals, develop a plan to achieve them, and hold you accountable to your progress.

Geoff Fairhurst is an outstanding mentor who initiated and guided us on our journey through “thought shopping” and how to effectively change the neuro pathways using affirmations. I was in a hole, full of procrastination and depression. He has changed my habits and given me a new lease on life. 60 is the new 40😎

The app is fantastic, it is a brilliant way to record how I am feeling, whether it be good bad or indifferent. It's design is made support your development everyday but like a warm coat in winter you will need to use it to get the benefit. It takes a few minutes a day to use it effectively. I use bubble popping to create dreams along with solving challenges. I thought shop to identify what is moving me towards my goals or causing blockages. I will also create tasks that need completing as well. I'll journal and when I do I focus on the feeling, the sounds, the smells. I am a better person when I use it. 10 thought shops 1 bubble 1 journal 1 meditation 10 to 15 minutes investment a day its a no brainer for me. 1 - If you are still reading download the app. 2 - contact a Mind Mentor mine is Leigh Stafford. It's an extremely powerful app.

This program has been life changing for our family. To be able to give ourselves and our children a concrete way to stop going down the rabbit holes of over thinking or worrying about the past and future, to work through meltdowns with the kids…there really are no words to describe what that has done for us. The meditations have helped me find my feet and remain centred, and there isn’t a night the kids don’t ask for one to fall asleep to. For the first time in a long time, the future looks bright and I’m excited to see what lies ahead with the rest of this program. Thank you for helping us thrive!
